I
can't remember a time in my life that knives weren't a fascination for
me. And I vividly recall reading the 1980 Sports
Illustrated
article about renowned knifemaker R.W. Loveless while I was in college.
I immediately took a metal working class and created my first knife
using very simple tools and equipment. I ended up befriending
the
late great knifemaker Ron Gaston, an early Knifemakers' Guild member
who worked out of South Carolina. Ron was kind enough to allow me to
learn the knifemaking craft by allowing me to work alongside
him in the
early to mid 80's as my schedule permitted. Ron's simple and
functional knife designs are
still what I strive for with each knife I create.
Knifemaking,
for me, is a passion and I enjoy every aspect of creating that special
blade. Over the years, my tools and equipment have gotten more advanced
and more useful but I still pride myself on completing each knife
in-house. Every knife is drawn out on paper, transferred to steel and
hand-profiled using no outside resources or water-jetting. I don't use
grinding jigs or anything mechanical to complete a knife and I perform
my own heat treating to ensure consistent results from my blade
performance. Every blade
is ground to finish by hand and eye. No two knives will be the same.
"Old school" still works for me.
